Superhero Foods for Kids

What are superhero foods?

They are foods that help us stay healthy, provide us nutritional support to help our bodies grow and develop and importantly, they make our bodies happy inside.

So what foods are they? They are vegetables, fruits, lean meats, healthy grains and dairy. The ‘villains’ may be considered as anything processed, high sugar, high salt and fast food.

By getting creative in the kitchen together you can create new recipes and produce meals that provide super tasty and super charged nutrients for our extraordinary bodies, to help us function healthily and correctly.

Here are some foods you can talk to your children about with their special ‘powers’ and why they are great for us are:

Fruit – Apple

They provide us vitamin C, A, B’s and many other nutrients. They are also a great source of fiber which helps keep our digestion happy.

Dairy – Milk

Milk is a best friend to our bones and teeth and has the ability to help keep them strong and supported while we grow.

Vegetable – Carrot

Carrots contain vitamin A which helps keep our eyes healthy and our vision strong. They come in different colours and provide different levels of nutrients.

Vegetable - Spinach

Contains a range of nutrients such as vitamin C, A, folic acid and iron. Spinach helps fight free radicals and helps keep our bodies feeling strong.

Fish - Salmon

Being a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, salmon helps keep our brains healthy and is a great source of protein which helps build your muscles.

Fruit - Blueberries

These powerful little berries provide us a great source of antioxidants that help our bodies from head to toe.

Grain - Quinoa

This 2-tone grain provides us a mix of nutrients such as protein, iron, magnesium, zinc and many others. It helps our bodies keep strong and ready to take on the day.

Keeping kids’ meals and snacks colourful and providing a range of the 5 food groups will help instill healthy behaviours. This will also help keep the whole family feeling good and nutritious all together. Making it fun and creative and getting kids imaginations going with superhero characters to match the foods they eat may help encourage taste buds and a sense of adventure.
